5 Top Tips for Fall Pool Maintenance

During fall, it’s likely that you’ll use your backyard pool less often compared with the summer months.

As the temperature drops, most people will want to get warm and cozy inside rather than spend time splashing around in their pool.

However, it’s still important to take care of pool maintenance during fall in order to avoid damage and ensure your pool remains in good condition for when you want to use it again.

In fact, pool maintenance and pool cleaning are essential all year round if you’re to make the most of your personal backyard oasis.

With this in mind, the team here at Backyard Paradise Luxury Pools has put together a handy fall pool care and maintenance guide, providing you with great tips on how to best look after your backyard pool at this time of year.

When your pool is not being regularly used, it can fall into disrepair.

Damage may not be noticed as easily and sudden temperature changes can cause some elements to become broken or ineffective.

All this considered, it’s vital not to neglect your pool just because you may not be doing as much swimming as during the summer.

By following the tips below, you can ensure your pool stays in the best condition all year round.

1. Clear the pool of leaves and debris

Perhaps the earliest sign that fall is upon us is when the leaves start falling off the trees. With this in mind, it’s perhaps no surprise that one of the most common pool cleaning tasks in fall is leaf removal.

You may spot leaves in the water, especially if you have trees above your pool. While it might not seem a big deal, when left in the water leaves can offer the perfect breeding ground for algae growth, which can be harmful to your pool and its equipment. To prevent this, take some time to remove leaves and other debris that may have made its way into your pool.

2. Keep the pool clean

Just because you may not be swimming in your pool as regularly, doesn’t mean that it shouldn’t still be cleaned.

You should continue with your normal pool cleaning schedule to ensure that your pool’s water and equipment remain in a good condition.

Many people neglect pool cleaning during the colder months, and this comes back to haunt them when they want to use it again as they notice damage and disrepair. Consider specialist equipment such as a pool vacuum to clean pool tiles and your deck.

Also, take some time to focus on cleaning pool filters as they might be working harder than usual due to the aforementioned leaves and debris.

3. Regulate the pool temperature

As the mercury dips, you should also consider more closely regulating the temperature of your pool.

If you still intend to swim in the pool despite it being colder, you can adjust the temperature to ensure it’s more comfortable for you. It may also be worth running your pool pump for fewer hours of the day. Every pool is different so it’s worth discussing this with your pool contractor.

4. Use the right pool chemicals

As every pool owner knows, adding chemicals is one of the most fundamental aspects of pool health.

And while it’s important to still use the right chemical treatments during fall, you may not need to use as much as normal. This is because as pool usage declines, so does the demand for pool chemicals.

Regularly test your pool’s balance and chemical levels, applying chlorine and pH treatments as appropriate.

5. Hire a company to maintain the pool for you

Fall can be a tricky time to carry out pool maintenance. While owners may be well used to how to look after their pools in the summer when it’s regularly being used, it can sometimes be hard to know what the right thing to do is in the colder weather.

This is why hiring a professional pool company to maintain it for you is always recommended. That way you can rest assured that your pool is getting the right treatment without having to worry whether or not it’ll be ready to use once summer rolls around.
